Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
INPROQUIMA focuses its activities on sustainable development research. The research lines are related to industrial and environmental processes, to improve the quality of products, the energy balance, process safety and environmental concerns. The group"s evolution is strongly linked to the demand for knowledge in processes of industrial or environmental interest. Currently, the group collaborates with different companies (EMGRISA, SARGA, DISEPROSA, EthicalChem, etc), public organizations (Gov. Aragon, Gov. Madrid) and research groups, with a wide network of international contacts. INPROQUIMA has published more than 100 articles (chem. eng., env.eng., biotechnol., aq. resources and env. sciences) and has participated in 10 competitive national projects one European project and 8 projects with private companies, some of them of great importance in the chemical and environmental sector.
Dr. ARTURO ROMERO, Full Professor. Research lines / projects proposed
The current research lines are:
1.Soil and Water Remediation by In Situ Chemical Oxidation and Reduction processes.
2.Water Treatment by Advanced Oxidation Processes
3.Caprolactam manufacturing processes. Purification of cyclohexanone.
4.Etherification of Glycerol to obtain additives.

The research group facilities include two labs, one for environmental research and other for industrial processes
intensification. There are facilities for studying homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic reactions in a wide
range of pressure and temperature, in continuous, discontinuous and semi-continuous operation, a laboratory for
the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants by advanced oxidation technologies, facilities for the
study of soil remediation and specialized software for modeling and optimization of chemical and environmental
processes.
The candidate would join the lines 1 and 2, specifically the candidate will work in a project dealing to the
remediation of an old landfill located in the province of Huesca (Spain) dedicated to the manufacture of lindane, in
which there is a high contamination of soil and groundwater due to the presence of chlorinated organic
compounds (mainly chlorobenzenes and hexachlorocyclohexanes). Currently, different alternatives, in situ and onsite,
are being studied depending on the type of contamination:
-In situ chemical oxidation: persulfate activated by alkali, by temperature, iron, etc
-In situ chemical reduction, using zero valent iron micro and nanoparticles
-Advanced oxidation treatments (electrooxidation, Fenton, electro-Fenton, catalytic wet peroxide oxidation)
-DNAPL extraction using surfactants (and subsequent recovery of the surfactant)
-Alkaline hydrolysis followed by air stripping and adsorption onto activated carbon
