Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets play an essential role in the Earth's climate. Their high albedo reduces the solar radiation absorbed by the Earth's surface. Their elevation lowers temperatures in the surrounding regions and affects atmospheric circulation. They also store very large amounts of fresh water, so that variations in their volume have an impact on sea level as well as on ocean circulation on a global scale. The response of ice sheets to global warming, however, is one of the main uncertainties in future sea level projections. Ice sheets are considered to be tipping points in the Earth system, i.e. they could show non-linear and even irreversible threshold behaviour in response to changes in climate or atmospheric CO2 levels, with important consequences for global sea level. Our group investigates the past and future evolution of ice sheets using a three-dimensional ice sheet model (https://palma-ice.github.io/yelmo-docs/).
