Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The Complutense Research Group SU+MA [University+Museum] (https://www.ucm.es/suma-universidad-museo/ ) was founded by Javier Arnaldo Alcubilla, professor in the Department of History of Contemporary Art at the UCM, in 2007. Since then, the group has been expanding coherently, advancing from the lines of research defined at the time: museum studies from multiple perspectives, museology and museography, the history of collections and the relationship between art history and museums, among others. These themes have been updated with the temporal and intellectual development of the group: dealing with the involvement of museums and exhibitions in contemporary or historical cultural narratives, the links between art historians and museums, the debates on museums and their functions (their definition), the processes of visualisation of art in public or private heritage collections, with all that this entails in terms of image consumption, codification of knowledge and dissemination. In addition to these topics, we can also add the tools of museological interpretation specific to the visual arts, exhibitions and the construction (and revision) of narratives, the analysis of cultural policies aimed at the creation of museums in unique historical contexts, the role of museums in the 2030 agenda and other contemporary artistic-cultural fields of action.
Research lines / projects proposed
Linked to the Ramón y Cajal research program, this line of work studies the history of utopias in relationship to ecologism. Topics related to the visual cultures of ecologism, the historization of utopianism linked to ecologism, and its links with contemporary art and aesthetics are welcome.
