Ecology and evolution of interaction networks
Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
I am currently a researcher at the Evolution and Conservation Biology Research Group of the Complutense University of Madrid and member of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/FIOCRUZ), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My interests and experience are focused on the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interaction networks and infectious disease dynamics. For that, I combine empirical data, mathematical modeling and tools derived from network science. My research lies at the intersection of community and ecosystem ecology, evolutionary biology, epidemiology and conservation biology. I am particularly interested in understanding the effects of biodiversity loss and environmental disturbance on community structure, ecosystem function and human health across spatial and temporal scales.

I also join the multi-institutional research group IRIS (Innovation for Resilience, Inclusion and Sustainability) and the Science Panel for the Amazon.
Research lines / projects proposed
complex networks, mathematical models, community ecology, parasitism, conservation ecology, epidemiology

Professional Experience & Documents
Cecilia S. Andreazzi has extensive experience in ecological and evolutionary modelling and zoonotic disease dynamics, merging academic expertise with a proven ability to lead interdisciplinary research. Her early work focused on biodiversity conservation, studying species interactions in fragmented landscapes. During her PhD (Universidade de São Paulo, 2012-2016), she advanced coevolutionary theory with innovative models to understand the assembly and evolution of interaction networks. Her work has also deepen knowledge on eco-evolutionary feedbacks, resulting in influential publications. Later, at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Brazil), Dr. Andreazzi addressed critical challenges in parasite ecology and advanced the understanding of key drivers of zoonotic disease outbreaks.
Cecilia S. Andreazzi obtained a FCT grant to investigate landscape change effects on parasite-host systems at Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal, 2021-2022). She expanded this research as a postdoctoral researcher at Universidad Complutense de Madrid through a Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant (2022-2023). She is currently a senior postdoctoral researcher, through the Atracción Talento Investigador program, leading an emerging research group aimed at unraveling the role and impact of socioecological interactions on One Health through different approaches.
Dr. Andreazzi has also carried out research visits to different institutions in Switzerland, USA, Belgium, The Netherlands, Argentina as well as participated in a number of international workshops and scientific schools in different countries. She has been actively participating in four international consortia, which joins different institutions from Europe, North and South America, and Africa. All this has allowed her to developed a wide international and multidisciplinary network of collaborators.

As a result of her research, Dr. Andreazzi has published 32 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 17 of them ranked Q1 (including 9 in the first decile) according to WoS JIF, most of them as leading or senior author, and covering different problems on ecological interactions, complex networks, wildlife disease ecology and epidemiology. Her publications have received around 900 citations resulting in an h-index of 17 (Google Scholar), and achieved significant scientific impact, with an average Field Citation Ratio (Dimensions) of her top ten publications above 10. In addition, she has published 3 book chapters and presented her work in 14 invited seminars and more than 30 conferences (4 of them as an invited speaker). She has also organized 6 scientific conferences and workshops in Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland and Spain.

Cecilia S. Andreazzi has raised funds to carry out her research and form and lead her own team. She is/was the principal investigator of several projects funded in competitive calls by public and private institutions in Brazil (CNPq, FIOTEC, SinBiose, Serrapilheira Institute), Portugal (FCT), and Spain (MSCA and Atracción Talento Investigador). She is leading a WP and a task in two competitive international projects, funded by NSF and Horizon Europe program, respectively. She is/was also a member of the research team of other 2 national and 5 regional competitive projects.

To ensure the impact of her research on society, Dr. Andreazzi has published 8 reports and policy briefs aimed at informing decision-making processes, wrote 5 popular science articles and her work appeared in more than 40 articles in general media. Her scientific publications also received a significant social impact with 13 of them placed in percentiles above 80th in Altmetric similar-age outputs ranking. In addition, she is member of the United Nations Science Panel for the Amazon, the Brazilian COVID-19 scientific committee, and is directly involved in organisations committed to the One Health framework. Specifically, she structured the PICTIS platform (Portugal), and is now part its scientific committee and the leader of its One Health/Global Health Sectorial Lab; and she also co-coordinates the multi-institutional research group IRIS, which aims to develop solutions on sustainability in the North-East of Brazil.

Cecilia S. Andreazzi has co-supervised 1 PhD student and supervised 3 bachelor and 2 master students, and 2 postdoctoral researchers. She is currently supervising 1 and co-supervising 4 PhD students, and supervising 3 postdoctoral researchers. She enabled, through her projects and their funding, the interchange of three researchers and two PhD students between Brazilian universities and research institutions and Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She has also been part of 11 thesis committees. Dr. Andreazzi was a lecturer in 8 different subjects (5 of them also as a coordinator) in official postgraduate programs. She is/was an editor for three different journals.

As a result of this research career, Dr. Andreazzi obtained the R3 certificate with the highest score.
