Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The research group in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Mental Health (EPISAM; https://www.ucm.es/grupos/grupo/980), is based in the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, one of the oldest and biggest university in Spain. This is a young research group with an outstanding trajectory in recent years in the context of the search for developmental profiles of mental pathology and behaviour. The group has an interdisciplinary spirit formed by researchers from the disciplines of Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Nursing.
The work of the research members of the EPISAM group includes field studies with community population and clinical studies with hospital population. The research group regularly hosts master students in different biomedical specialties for training.
Research lines / projects proposed
The EPISAM research group has a long tradition in the study of crucial topics in mental health and suicide prevention. One of the most outstanding research lines is Suicide prevention, focusing on providing updated evidence on the different forms of suicidal behaviour as well as epidemiological surveillance of the phenomenon at the level of mortality. In this sense, there is a clear interest in prioritising the study of populations vulnerable to suicidal behaviour, such as adolescents, young adults, incarcerated population, the LGTBIQ+ population, or people with a mental disorder. This line also involves the study of pathophysiologically based markers, such as inflammatory and neuroendocrine response markers. In recent years, the study of new risk factors coming from the use of internet-connected devices and social determinants is of interest from EPISAM researchers.
In terms of scientific production, more than 150 articles have been published by members of the EPISAM group in the last five years. In addition, the participation in the writing and coordination of books and manuals is also one of the lines of work widely cultivated by the group.
Members of the EPISAM research group are active in various research structures and consortia.
First of all, it should be noted that several of the group researchers are part of the Spanish Consortium for Networked Research in Mental Health (CIBERSAM ISCIII), a research infrastructure of the Spanish Institute of Health (Instituto de Salud Carlos III). Moreover, the PI and different members of the group also form part of the the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health Services (https://www.ccomsuam.org/). The researchers collaborate with different clinical research institutes at a hospital level (San Carlos Clinic Hospital Research Institute, Spain).
In terms of research networks, several researchers from the EPISAM group form part of the SURVIVE consortium, which focuses on research into indicated suicide prevention (https://www.surviveproyecto.com/). A new research project (ALENTAR) starts focused on using natural lenguage processing (NLP) tools to improve the accuracy in detecting mental health problems and suicide risk in adolescents. The ALENTAR consortium is made up of five partners (two universities and three hospital research institutes).
There is also the participation of members of the EPISAM group in the MyHero consortium, which focuses on the study of adolescent mental health in the Malaysian context (e.g., https://kavlifondet.no/en/2022/12/79-million-euro-for-research-into-child-and-adolescentmentalhealthfromkavlitrust/). Researchers from this group are also part of different European mental health research consortia (e.g. https://prism2project.eu/ or
https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/603196). Currently, several researchers from the group have also joined an EU COST initiative that is currently under review, focusing on addressing child and adolescent suicide (SPARK initiative). Finally, several EPISAM group researchers are involved in various international initiatives, such as the Global Consortium for Depression Prevention
(https://www.preventionofdepression.org/), Global Burden of Disease (GBD;
https://www.healthdata.org/research-analysis/gbd), or the Cross-Cultural Consortium on Irritability (C3I).
