Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The team is a multidisciplinary basic research group (GESCAMET) with researchers from different departments from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (i) Pluridisciplinary Institute and Department of Pharmacology , ii) Department of Physiology, and iii) Department of Biochemistry), as well as from San Pablo - CEU University (Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health). Moreover, we collaborate with clinical research groups from the Hypertension Unit at the 12 de Octubre Hospital and at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (i) Obesity and Vascular Risk Unit, ii) Hypertension Unit, iii) Oesophagogastric and Obesity Surgery Unit). Our group has ongoing projects with several international research groups and welcomes pregraduate (Erasmus students) as well as postgraduate (pre and postdoctoral) students from different European and South American Countries. For more information see webpage.
Research lines / projects proposed
Our research interest is the study of the pathophysiology of the vascular wall and the search for effective drugs to prevent and / or reverse cardiovascular damage. In recent years, our research has focused on the study of the relationship between excess weight and the development of cardiovascular disease (endothelial dusfunction, vascular remodeling, arterial stiffness), as well as to establish the molecular mechanisms involved in its development with a special focus on the renin-angiotensin system, oxidative stress, albuminuria and perivascular adipose tissue. A better understanding of these mechanisms will allow to develop and evaluate new drugs and design intervention strategies to prevent and / or slow the progression of cardiovascular disease associated with overweight and obesity. We have two main research topics, which are part of Challenge 1 "Health , demographic change and well-being" of the National Strategic Plan for Science and Technology and the social challenge of the European Union.
- Obesity and cardiovacular disease
- Albuminuria and cardiovascular diseaseWe are now working on following projects,
- Translational study of mechanisms involved in the development of arterial stiffness associated to obesity: new therapeutic strategies
- Translational research on mechanisms involved in the development of albuminuria and its relation to vascular dysfunction
- Study of natural products, drugs and diets useful in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular damage associated to obesity and/or albuminuria
