Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The ‘History and Ontology of the Present’ Research Group (Ref. 941051), classified as EXCELLENT by the State Research Agency (AEI), has as its main object of study those phenomena and realities that define our present, with special attention to the Euro-American sphere and, even more specifically, to the Spanish-speaking world. Its main lines of research are the history of philosophy, Spanish and Latin American philosophy, political philosophy, post-colonialism, republicanism, populism and conceptual history. The Group's research team is mostly made up of teaching and research staff from the Department of Philosophy and Society at the Complutense University of Madrid who, over the last few years, have worked together in pursuit of common objectives. In addition to this core of UCM researchers, there are also nodes attached to the Universities of Salamanca, Murcia and the USA, among others, whose members participate actively and regularly in the Group's activities.
Research lines / projects proposed
In recent years, his primary object of study has been the political phenomenon of contemporary populism, to which he has devoted several international conferences since October 2016, in the framework of the Research Project ‘Saavedra Fajardo Library (V): Populism versus Republicanism. The political challenge of the second globalisation’ (FFI2016-75978-R), directed by José Luis Villacañas. Currently, the Group concentrates its research work on the implementation of the Research Project ‘Classical contemporaneity and its dislocation: from Weber to Foucault’ (PID2020-113413RB-C31), directed by José Luis Villacañas and Rodrigo Castro Orellana. The extensive history of the Group shows a very important capacity to organise conferences, seminars and other research events, as well as training activities in research activity, among which the Teaching Innovation Projects and the Doctoral Seminar offered each academic year in the Faculty of Philosophy UCM stand out.
