Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
We are a consolidated research group, active since 2005, which brings together senior and junior researchers in an interdisciplinary environment. Our work focuses on the history of social communication from an integral perspective, analyzing the interaction of the different media in each historical period (press, cinema, television, radio, photography, graphic humor, video games or new formats of the digital era), attending to their informative, persuasive and entertainment dimensions. In addition, we address key issues on audiovisual heritage, its conservation, dissemination and reuse, contributing to the development of new methodologies and approaches in this field (Jean Monnet Modern Times Chair. Ref. 621102-EPP-1-2020-1-ES-EPPJMO-CHAIR). We have an extensive network of national and international academic collaborations and a strong track record in the supervision of predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, including MSCA fellows from prestigious universities such as Leipzig and Thessaloniki. Our scientific output is extensive and internationally recognized, with influential publications and editorial leadership in reference books.
Research lines / projects proposed
Throughout two decades of activity, our group has developed multiple research projects around the Social History of Cinema (focusing on audiences), the Silent Revolution of Entertainment, the Audiovisual Representation of War and the History of Television (1956- 2010), among others. In recent years, the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of the group has led to the study of socially relevant issues, such as hate speech in digital environments (http://defyinghate.com/).
One of our projects, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, analyzes the narratives that support these discourses in three key areas: politics, sports and bullfighting. Through the study of comments and publications in digital media, social networks such as X and TikTok, as well as specialized forums (e.g. Burbuja.info), we have examined the dynamics and mechanisms that favor the proliferation of hostile discourse.
Another research project, currently underway, focuses on the analysis of two of the most widespread and damaging manifestations of digital hate: misogyny and political hatred. This project pays special attention to platforms such as TikTok and the messaging service Telegram. We not only explore the narratives that are disseminated in these spaces but also investigate effective strategies to counter them.
Within this framework of study, we study the role of new media and digital formats, including memes, deepfakes and influencers, with the aim of understanding their impact on the construction and propagation of hate speech in the contemporary digital ecosystem.
