Latin literature in extracts: florilegia, anthologies and collections from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The Research Group, which obtained a mention of Excellence, was created in 2007 and is currently composed of six researchers from the Latin Philology Area of the UCM. The main goal of research is the recovery, edition and analysis of the florilegia and collections of exempla (medieval manuscripts), as well as anthologies (Renaissance editions), with extracts from classical authors, especially those preserved in Spanish libraries.<br /><br />The Research Group, backed by numerous archievements, has consolidated itself as a national and international benchmark in this field of study. It has carried out eight projects financed by the DGCYT, led by María José Muñoz Jiménez (Medieval Latin Anthologies preserved in Spain) and Patricia Cañizares Ferriz (Medieval Latin Exempla preserved in Spain, ELME Project http://www.proyectoelme.com).<br /><br />Within the framework of the investigations of the Research Group, more than 150 codices with extracts from classical, Christian, medieval, and Renaissance authors have been identified, as well as almost 100 manuscripts with exempla, and more than 150 scientific publications have been published. The creation and development of digital tools in OpenAccess that collect research archievements mean the opening of new lines of investigation, or of potentiation of the existing ones in new registers, and involve an important progress for the digital humanism studies in the field of Classical Philology.<br /><br />

The Group"s specific lines of research are as follows:<br /><br />" Study of the partial transmission of Latin literature during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: florilegia, anthologies and polianteas.<br /><br />" Study of the development and dissemination of exemplary Latin literature in late Middle Ages: exempla collections.<br /><br />" Digital resources for Humanities: creation and development of databases for the dissemination of catalogued manuscripts and the results obtained from the research projects already completed, assets, as well as the ongoing work of the ResearchGroup.<br /><br />The Group proposes the integration of candidates in the following projects:<br /><br />" Creation and development of a database of Latin Florilegia preserved in Spain (FLORes), directed by Montserrat Jiménez San Cristóbal. Tasks: identification and description of the manuscripts preserved in Spanish archives and libraries that transmit this type of text, as well as the identification and study of the texts selected in each compilation, their ordinatio and the typology of each one of them.<br /><br />" Development of the above-mentioned database of Medieval Latin exempla preserved in Spain (ELME database: www.proyectoelme.com), led by Patricia Cañizares Ferriz. Tasks: review, identification and description of the manuscripts preserved in Spanish archives and libraries that transmit this type of text, as well as the identification and study of the exemplary texts transmitted by the manuscripts and assessment of their degree of originality and connection with vernacular literature in Spanish.<br /><br />" Integration of Research Group"s databases in the HispaLat network (project led by Patricia Cañizares Ferriz), which will collect a significant part of the Latin bibliographic heritage conserved in Spain.<br />
