Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) is located at the Organic Chemistry Department in the School of Chemistry. The group is made up of 17 members, including staff members, senior and postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and visiting and undergraduate students. Our researchers have different areas of expertise, including organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, cellular and structural biology, protein NMR, and computational modelling. The main research interests of our group are the development of new pharmacological agents and the identification of therapeutic targets. In the first approach we are carrying out several research lines on three fields of major relevance for human health nowadays: cancer, CNS-associated diseases and the development of new antibiotics. In the second approach, we combine medicinal chemistry, chemical biology and proteomics in order to develop platforms suitable for the identification of targets of biologically active natural products and metabolites produced by the human microbiota.
Research lines / projects proposed
The proposed research line encompasses aspects from the medicinal chemistry and chemical biology fields. It is focused on the identification and validation of new molecular targets in relationship with the endocannabinoid system using different methodological approaches that expand from the rational design and chemical synthesis to the in vitro validation experiments such as in-gel fluorescence assays, western blotting and cell culture.
