Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The main objective of the group is health surveillance under the approach of a single health for which a multidisciplinary group has been formed with referents in each of the areas of work belonging to different institutions (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos -CSIC-UCLM-JCCLM, Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal-INIA, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, University of Minnesota, Universidad de Extremadura, Universidad de Burgos and Universidad Europea). The group has shared equipment and facilities at the VISAVET center that have allowed them to jointly develop their lines of research. With respect to funding, the group has participated since its inception in more than 170 research projects, both in national plans and in international competitive programs [e.g. European Joint Programme (currently the only European food safety program) and European Research Council (first in the veterinary area of the UCM)], more than 300 contracts with administrations and companies and has obtained more than 80 staff grants. To a large extent, thanks to these last grants, it has consolidated as a space for continuing education, allowing, for example, the defense of more than 80 doctoral theses. Finally, the collaboration of members of the group in expert panels, platforms and working groups demonstrates the consistency of the group in its areas of work at international (e.g. Med-Vet-Net Association), national (e.g. Veterinary Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Network and RE-LAB) and regional level (e.g. Advanced Technologies of the Community of Madrid, with excellent qualification after 3 programs.
Research lines / projects proposed
Within the group and included in the Animal Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Service (SAP_ VISAVET) that I direct, we are carrying out a very intense work within the Veterinary Pathology in some lines of research with great impact on Animal Health such as:
- Search for a vaccine candidate for the African Swine Fever virus to be applied in wild boar in order to reduce the contagion and spread of this disease that is decimating the swine population, especially in Asia and Eastern European countries.
- Study of cross-reactions produced by different non-tuberculous mycobacteria in the IDTB test and their potential lesions in cattle that could mislead with Bovine Tuberculosis.
- Histopathological alterations induced by different infectious agents in marine farms in the Mediterranean sea.
- Forensic Veterinary: establishment of clear diagnostic protocols in the different types of animal abuse from the point of view of Veterinary Pathology.
