Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The group consists of several senior and junior researchers. Our current research activity is mostly focused on the space ultraviolet telescope design and building project under the name World Space Observatory " Ultaviolet (WSO-UV, www.wso-uv.es), which is one of the main projects of ROSCOSMOS (Russia"s space agency), where AEGORA is in charge of developing the instrument"s camera detector. This telescope will grant access to ultraviolet study for the international space community in the post-Hubble era. Other activities carried out by AEGORA include the coordination of both global and European"s Ultraviolet Astronomy network (gNUVA and NUVA, respectively) and collaborating in Spain"s educational reform regarding science. Furthermore, AEGORA is the Spanish node in the global educational project Hands on Universe, HOU. In 2009, the European HOU consortium was awarded the silver medal in Information and Communication Technologies for making Europe "the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010 in the field of Education and Training".
Research lines / projects proposed
1. Space projects:
WSO-UV ultraviolet space telescope (jcuva.ucm.es). AEGORA manages the Spanish scientific participation in the project including the contribution to the Field Camera Unit (FCU), as well as a significant fraction of the ground segment software. FCU is an instrument for imaging in the 112-800 nm spectral range and slitless spectroscopy in the 112-180 nm range. AEGORA is also involved in the development of small (cubesat size) proposals including lunar projects for Earth and Solar System observation at ultraviolet and submillimeter wavelengths. Projects on UV instrumentation development and verification are among the group priorities.
2. Astrophysics Research: galactic star formation.
This is the main research activity of the group including. Main topics include: accretion and outflow physics, young planetary discs evolution, stellar and disc winds and the formation and early evolution of planets.
Also projects on the properties of interstellar dust and its role in the propagation of hydromagnetic waves in the interstellar medium are welcome.
3. Big data and data mining
Data mining and optimization processes directly linked to the aforementioned research lines have progressed to a line of work in statistics and operational research, actively developed throughout the years.
4. Numerical simulations
The group is working with the MHD codes PLUTO and ATHENA as well with Cloudy radiative transfer code. Applicants with experience in the use of RADMC3D are most welcome.
