Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
TRANSBIOMAT Group is a new created research group at Complutense University. We are a multidisciplinary research group formed by experts in polymer science, biomaterials and biocatalyst with strong orientation to technological transfer.<br />The group has broad interest and its main research lines are:<br />1. Chitosan Science. For sustainable development goals: on the way to third-generation chitosans. We focus on green processes to produce tailor-made chitosans, oligosaccharides and chitosan derivatives.<br /><br />2. Structural-functional polymer analysis<br />Chitosan is a polymer with a wide variety of biological activities and properties. We focus on determine which physico-chemical properties of chitosan are related to these activities. To this aim, we employ a panel of biophysical techniques to establish structure- functionality - biological activity relationships.<br /><br />3. Polymeric materials in pharmacy and biomedicine<br />We focus on the development of polymeric materials based on chitosan and other polymers. Research lines / projects proposed
Characterization of physicochemical properties of chitin, chitosan derivatives<br />Main factors affecting characteristics and functional properties of chitosan and its derivatives are dependent on their molecular weight, degree of deacetylation and on molecular conformation. Therefore, structural characterization of chitosan and its derivatives becomes an important item for better understanding of its functional and physicochemical properties. This characterization will be carried out by different methods based on different principles, such as, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy, viscosimetry, etc "<br />
