Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department

TRANSBIOMAT Group is a new created research group at Complutense University. We are a multidisciplinary research group formed by experts in polymer science, biomaterials and biocatalyst with strong orientation to technological transfer.
The group has broad interest and its main research lines are:
1. Chitosan Science. For sustainable development goals: on the way to third-generation chitosans. We focus on green processes to produce tailor-made chitosans, oligosaccharides and chitosan derivatives.

2. Structural-functional polymer analysis
Chitosan is a polymer with a wide variety of biological activities and properties. We focus on determine which physico-chemical properties of chitosan are related to these activities. To this aim, we employ a panel of biophysical techniques to establish structure- functionality - biological activity relationships.

3. Polymeric materials in pharmacy and biomedicine
We focus on the development of polymeric materials based on chitosan and other polymers. This includes soft materials, hybrid materials".

Research lines / projects proposed
Multifunctional chitosan- based materials
In this project we plan to obtain smart delivery systems based on chitosan and chitosan derivatives. Original hybrid assemblies composed of a particle core surrounded by a hydrophobic/hydrophilic shell emerged as promising entities for various biomedical applications. Their broadened bio-potentialities, ranging from model membrane systems, to substance delivery reservoirs or therapeutic vectors, are furthered by their versatility of composition due to the possible wide variation in the particle nature and size, as well as in the formulation. Moreover, these systems combine the advantages of colloidal systems with a physical stability almost similar to that of conventional drug delivery systems.
