Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The Group of Analysis on Islam in Europe (GRAIS) is a team formed by arabists, anthropologists, jurists, politologists and social psychologists, who are interested in analysing the social, political, economic, religious and legal dimensions related to the presence of Muslim minorities in different European societies.
The formation and/or consolidation of religious, cultural and/or linguistic minorities, which include immigrant population but also native Muslim communities, presents new challenges and situations that these days occupy an important place on the European agenda.
GRAIS aims to encourage collective and individual investigations that surpass possible essentialist and orientalist views on Islam and that contribute to generate critical thought on the subject-matter.
Research lines / projects proposed
Political participation of young Muslims in Spain
This research line seeks to look beyond the study of Muslims from a migration analytical approach, which considers Muslims to form part of a foreign community subject to integration procedures, and it intends to analyze the political participation of Muslims born and/or fully socialized in the Spanish state within the framework of forming associations. The objective is to explore the transformations that intervene in the processes of identity building among young Muslims, their spaces of transition as well as the different mechanisms of political participation of those populations with a high social and political capital and who participate in society from a subject position that can be defined as Muslim. In order to understand the complex nature of the processes of loss, acquisition and transformation of social, political and religious capital among these youngsters who identify as Muslim, research should be conducted based on a critical methodological reflexivity as part of an ethnographical and discursive-analytical study of these processes. For this purpose, different sociological, anthropological and sociolinguistic research techniques (aimed to form part at a larger critical multi-situated collaborative ethnography) are planned to be conducted on the role of Muslimness in juvenile associate spaces in different regions within the territory of the Spanish state.
