Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
The Research Group on Islam and Arab-Islamic Cultures in Transnational Contexts(GRAIS) is a team formed by arabists, anthropologists, jurists, political scientists and social psychologists, who are interested in analysing the social, political, economic, religious and legal dimensions related to the presence of Muslim minorities in different European societies. The formation and/or consolidation of religious, cultural and/or linguistic minorities, which include immigrant population but also native Muslim communities, presents new challenges and situations that these days occupy an important place on the European agenda.GRAIS aims to encourage collective and individual investigations that surpass possible essentialist and orientalist views on Islam and that contribute to generate critical thought on the subject-matter.
Research lines / projects proposed
Islam and citizenship in Spain.
The research lines focus on the relation between citizenship, Muslimness and religious freedom within the territory of the Spanish state. Beyond the consideration of Muslims as part of a foreign community subject to integration procedures, these research lines seek to analyze the implementation and compliance of legislation related to religious freedom and other rights of Muslim minorities in different regions of the Spanish state, including those related to education, establishment of places of worship or Islamic burial space and rites. In addition, these lines aim to understand rights-claiming activities and other forms of political participation undertaken in the public sphere by Muslim citizens in Spain.
