Brief description of the Research Team / Research Group / Department
Politics and Society in 19th-Century Europe is a small but dynamic research group within the Department of Political History, Ideas, and Geography at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The group operates within one of Spain’s leading research units in political history, fostering innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of 19th-century European politics and society.
The group actively participates in the montly Santos Juliá Contemporary History Research Seminar, contributing to discussions on political history and historiographical debates. It also organises annual meetings on new advances in country-specific 19th-century European historiography, providing a forum for scholars to engage with new methodological and theoretical perspectives. In addition, the group hosts international conferences, bringing together historians from various backgrounds to discuss emerging research trends.
The group is commited to fostering dialogue and advancing scholarship on the political and social transformations of 19th-century Europe. Current members mostly work on social and political mobilisation, iconography, representative institutions, policing, the use of the public space and nationalism.
With a strong emphasis on international collaboration, the group welcomes researchers working on related themes and seeks to engage in broader scholarly networks, promoting new research avenues in the study of 19th-century European history.
